Round 2 of the E.Tarrant & Sons Junior A Hurling Championship provided exciting fare over the weekend with highly competitive games .

In Group 1, Meelin gave their championship campaign a real boost with an exciting 1-20 to 0-22 victory over Dromtariffe, this game played in Kanturk on Saturday was nip and tuck all the way through as both teams battled manfully for the upper hand . The scores were level on numerous occasions and just as Dromtariffe seemed to be gaining a semblance of  control- Meelin struck for a well taken goal to set up an exciting finish. Strong defending by Meelin saw them win by a slender one point margin.

Kilbrin had a 2-18 to 2-11 victory over Banteer in the other Group 1 game played in Castlemagner on Sunday, Banteer battled all the way through- but Kilbrin were always a step ahead to add to their opening day victory over Meelin.

Kilbrin now sit on 4 points after 2 games with Meelin and Dromtariffe on 2 each , however all 4 teams are still in with a chance of reaching the knockout stages with the concluding round 3 games now taking on even greater importance.

In Group 2 Newmarket had a decisive 4-30 to 0-16 win over Freemount. Newmarket were a step ahead from the off , Freemount made every attempt to get  back in the game , but a superior Newmarket side pulled away to a comprehensive victory.

Newmarket now await their Semi-Final opponents while Freemount will look forward to their important clash with Millstreet in the Final Round.

 

The Duhallow Hurling Cup Final between Newmarket and Freemount will be played on Sunday Next , Aug 23rd in Meelin at 12 Noon,

The Fixture will also double up as a Round 2 JAHC Fixture. The competition which involved Meelin, Freemount, Kilbrin, Banteer , Millstreet and Newmarket was played on a knockout basis and the Final promises to  be a highly competitive encounter

The E. Tarrant & Sona Junior A Hurling Championship continues this weekend with the stakes being high in all games.

The action begins on Saturday ( Aug 22nd ) with a Group 1 Fixture between Meelin and Dromtariffe in Kanturk at 5.30 pm, Meelin will be looking for a much improved performance following their opening day setback to Kilbrin,  while Dromtariffe will be hoping to continue their winning streak following their opening day victory against Banteer.

The Group 1 action continues on Sunday , August 23rd when Banteer face Kilbrin in Castlemagner at 12 Noon, Kilbrin had an encouraging opening day victory over Meelin and will be looking to make a Championship statement while Banteer will take encouragement from their strong performance v Dromtariffe in the opening round.

In Group 2 , Newmarket play Freemount on Sunday , 23rd in meelin at 12 Noon, This will be Freemount’s opening game in the Championship and they will be hoping that their strong league campaign will be rewarded with Championship success while Newmarket will be hoping to continue on winning ways after a highly impressive opening day victory over Millstreet. This game also  doubles up as a Duhallow Hurling Cup Final.

The Ashgrove Renewables Junior A FC action continued with some cracking games in Round 2.

Lismire got their Championship campaign back on track with a superb 1-16 to 1-13 victory over Kanturk . Lismire scored  a goal and 2 points just before half -time and this gave them a strong buffer to resist a strong 2nd half comeback by Kanturk , Lismire leading 1-10 to 0-4 at half time defended stoutly and picked off important points as the 2nd half progressed. Kanturk were rewarded for their efforts with a late goal but were unable to close the gap to leave Lismire the ultimate winners, Lismire now play Kilbrin in Round 3 while Kanturk will be hoping for an upturn in fortunes v Ballydesmond.

 

Ballydesmond displayed their championship creditentials with a strong 0-19 to 0-10 victory over Kilbrin . A wind assisted Ballydesmond made the early running and had a commanding 10 point lead after 15 minutes play , Kilbrin gained a foothold in the 2nd quarter to leave the half time scoreline 0-13 to 0-5 in favour of Bally. Kilbrin upped their game in the 2nd half and Ballydesmond had to display their strong defensive qualities to prevent goal scoring opportunities, however as the half progressed Ballydesmond used all their experience to register an important victory. Kilbrin now face Lismire in a winner takes all Round 3 game while Ballydesmond will be hoping to continue their good form against Kanturk.

 

Castlemagner had a 3-13 to 1-13 victory over Lyre in Group 2 , Lyre had an early goal and were in strong contention for most of the 1st half, however 2 goals in the 2nd quarter saw Castle take a half time lead of 3-5 to 1-6. The 2nd half was an even affair with points exchanged as Lyre battled gamely to reduce the deficit, However Castlemagner protected their goal resoutely, and ensured an important victory which gurantees them a Semi-Final appearance. Lyre who were making their Championship debut will look forward to their next game v Knocknagree in another winner takes all fixture.
